Project Warlock - Soundtrack

Project Warlock adds light role-playing elements to the classic first-person shooter formula. The protagonist, an unnamed warlock, can wield both conventional weapons and magical spells. After completing each level, the player returns to the warlock's workshop where upgrade points and experience points collected in each level may be used to purchase new spells, weapon upgrades, and player perks such as increased health points.

The game received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[7] YouTube reviewer Gggmanlives (now GmanLives) called Project Warlock "a damn good game" and praised the pixel art visuals, sound design, and fast-paced gun play; while criticizing the unbalanced spells and overly dark atmosphere.[12] Destructoid also praised the sprite work while calling the soundtrack "superb".[8] Dark Side of Gaming took a more critical view, describing the boss fights as "poorly constructed".[13]

Project Warlock is a fun, affordable ($14.99 USD) homage to a bygone era of first-person shooters that did not hold your hand and only allowed you to progress after you earned it. Fast-paced gameplay, tight, secret-filled levels, a fitting soundtrack, and sprite-based graphics all add up to a game that feels ripped from another era, while introducing a few ideas of its own to keep things fresh. Some balancing issues and an occasionally-glitchy weapon wheel hardly detract from what is ultimately a modern blast from the past.

Mark McKenzie's second feature film score boasts an ambition and craft that belie both his inexperience and the B-movie horror roots of the project. Warlock: The Armageddon instead possesses the melodic beauty one expects from an all-star Hollywood epic. While the smallish orchestra fails to achieve the visceral intensity one might hope, there's no denying the scope of McKenzie's achievement. The music is more mystical than menacing, capturing a distinct otherness well-matched to the onscreen narrative, complete with a series of choral passages that further establish the music's profoundly spiritual dimensions.

Graphics wise Project Warlock definitely gives off old school DOOM and Wolfenstein vibes. The pixel shadings and color scheme fits each of the levels perfectly and sets the mood/tone for them as well. In the games settings option, you can also change how the gameplay looks as you play. You can change the shadow options, color palettes, the blood and gore effects, etc. The Project Warlock soundtrack definitely had to have some inspiration from the past old-school FPS shooters. The heavy metal tracks feel just right as your running through levels as you shoot and dismember anything that crosses your line of sight.

Introduction (for all that it was given a sadly immemorable name) knocked me out from the moment I fired up the game: game soundtrack or not, it's one of the best downtempo tracks ever, and easily one of my favorite tracks, period. The fact that it fits the game's intro/menu sequence perfectly, and that it's essentially a remix of the main "Still Alive" theme that people know, just makes it even more impressive.

There have been lots of rumors and indications of a sequel to ME -- possibly using BF3's Frostbite 2 engine (which would be awesome) -- but no solid movement that I've seen. So I'm hoping EA has the sense to do something more with such an interesting IP and doesn't let it stagnate, and I'm really hoping they tap Magnus Birgersson to do the soundtrack again. The visuals and gameplay were fantastic on their own but the soundtrack gelled the whole experience together into something more.

Here, have a few more to listen to! I've been gathering together video game soundtracks on Spotify for a while now. It's a shame so many are still region restricted, though I appreciate Spotify's efforts to link to as many regionally available alternatives where possible!

An unrepentant retro FPS adventure with mild RPG elements, this is a real work of love in the vein of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and even Cybermage. Play a mysterious gun-toting warlock as you travel from place to place, destroying evil and finding weapons. Shoot things, cast spells, and cause mayhem. Great for any retro FPS enthusiast.

In addition to his ever-growing roster of firearms, the titular warlock also has a handy set of spells at his disposal. All of which vary in use from a spell used for illuminating the areas around him to spells used to inflict some much-deserved pain on demonic foes. One of which is the spell storm Rage, which is basically an orb of lightning used to fling powerful bolts of electricity at enemies.

The real icing on the cake is the superb soundtrack. Borrowing inspiration from id Software once again, this soundtrack has a range of themes from metal, to melodic rock, to church-organ-style ambiance. Each level has its own theme, too, so the soundtrack is made up of around 65 distinct songs. It almost makes up for a few of the flaws in the gameplay, because I had a total blast listening to the music while shooting enemies to bits.

However, such niggles quickly become second nature and do nothing to distract from the game's fast-paced grit. Enemies implode in gory geysers of blood and screech with frightening demonic flare, creating a tense tone supported by an excellent retro soundtrack and stunning pixel art. Each distinct and non-linear level is impressively detailed, down to the last fire-breathing 2D devil and destructible environments. The plot is enjoyably basic; "you good warlock, they bad beasties; kill". 2ff7e9595c
