If you don't configure this policy setting on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, services running as Local System that uses the default credentials will use the NULL session and revert to NTLM authentication for Windows operating systems earlier than Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.Beginning with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, the system allows Local System services that use Negotiate to use the computer identity when reverting to NTLM authentication.
You upgrade Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to Windows Vista or to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). However, the following Windows Time Synchronization service (W32Time)-related registry settings are not updated to the default Windows Vista values.Default registry settings in Windows XP
Vista Default Settings For Services
Some updates will fail if a particular service is not set to its default value or disabled. At this time, it is best for you to ensure that all services are set to the default values before updating your system. Windows Vista Default Service Registry Patches are online.
Although this is a slightly more involved option, the user could also reinstall Windows Vista. The problem is that the user needs a copy of the installation CD to use this method. The bonus is that reinstalling Windows Vista will restore the PC to its factory default settings. If the user retained (and can locate) the program's activation code, reinstalling this edition of Windows becomes much simpler.
Sometimes, when your computer is infected with a malware program (virus, trojan, rootkit, etc.), you face problems with critical Windows services, like Windows Firewall, Windows Update or other services which have been compromised or corrupted by the harmful program. In such cases, you must repair or restore these services to their default state.
* Note for Windows 10 Users: The instructions of this article was written in 2014 and has been proven to work on Windows 7, Vista, XP and on Windows Server 2003 & 2008. Because in the latest versions of Windows several services have changed, I recommend you to try to repair your Windows 10 system by running the SFC /SCANOW command in Admin Command Prompt, and then to manually restore the default "Startup Type" of the Windows services as mentioned in this PDF file: DefaultServicesWin10.pdf
Note: If you face errors with specific Windows services then you can download and merge the default registry file for any specific service from this link: -services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html
Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP was released on September 9, 2002. It contained over 300 minor, post-RTM bug fixes, along with all security patches released since the original release of XP. SP1 also added USB 2.0 support, the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, .NET Framework support, and support for technologies used by the then-upcoming Media Center and Tablet PC editions of XP.[73] The most significant change on SP1 was the addition of Set Program Access and Defaults, a settings page which allows programs to be set as default for certain types of activities (such as media players or web browsers) and for access to bundled, Microsoft programs (such as Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player) to be disabled. This feature was added to comply with the settlement of United States v. Microsoft Corp., which required Microsoft to offer the ability for OEMs to bundle third-party competitors to software it bundles with Windows (such as Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player), and give them the same level of prominence as those normally bundled with the OS.[74]
On release, Windows XP received critical acclaim. CNET described the operating system as being "worth the hype", considering the new interface to be "spiffier" and more intuitive than previous versions, but feeling that it may "annoy" experienced users with its "hand-holding". XP's expanded multimedia support and CD burning functionality were also noted, along with its streamlined networking tools. The performance improvements of XP in comparison to 2000 and Me were also praised, along with its increased number of built-in device drivers in comparison to 2000. The software compatibility tools were also praised, although it was noted that some programs, particularly older MS-DOS software, may not work correctly on XP because of its differing architecture. They panned Windows XP's new licensing model and product activation system, considering it to be a "slightly annoying roadblock", but acknowledged Microsoft's intent for the changes.[149] PC Magazine provided similar praise, although noting that a number of its online features were designed to promote Microsoft-owned services, and that aside from quicker boot times, XP's overall performance showed little difference over Windows 2000.[150] Windows XP's default theme, Luna, was criticized by some users for its childish look.[151][152]
Q. I purchased a new PC with Vista Home Premium installed. Windows Photo Gallery came preinstalled with a bundle of programs. Previously I used Picasa2, which I prefer now that I have tried Photo Gallery. The problem is that I can neither disable nor uninstall the Windows program. I have searched for a solution but am unable to find one. Help! (M.C., Raleigh, N.C.) googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2'); ); A. Luckily, Vista has a couple of features that allow you to easily customize your program settings and make Picasa2 your default photo program. One approach has you start with Picasa2 (or any other program) and pick which file types you want it to automatically open.Click on the start menu at the bottom left of your screen and type "default" in the search box. Choose the link for "Default Programs." (You'll start at this point for the second approach, too.)Click on "Set your default programs." A list of all of the programs you can configure will come up.Click on Picasa2. If you want it to be the default program for every file type, protocol or extension it can open, click on the "Set this program as default" button. Then click OK.If you want to be more selective, click on Picasa2 and then the "Choose defaults for this program" link. You can now see all of the files, protocols or extensions that you can open in Picasa2.If you want Picasa2 to be the default for a specific extension or protocol, check the box next to it. After you have made your selections, click on "Save" and then "OK."You also can approach this from the perspective of a certain type of file.Go back to the Default Programs window and click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program." This time, choose the file type you're interested in. Common photo file types are .jpg, .bmp, .tif and .gif. (To be sure you don't miss any files that default to Windows Photo Gallery, you can click on the "Current Default" bar to sort the file types by their default associations.)Highlight the file type and click the gray button for "Change program ..." Select Picasa2 and click "OK."By the way, the Default Programs feature in Vista also allows you to choose the program you want to launch when you insert a DVD, USB flash drive or other device/media. Just go back to the main Default Programs menu and choose "Change AutoPlay settings."Americans' wallets may be tight, but a recent report predicts that won't affect our spending on gadgets in 2009. According to a survey by the Consumer Electronics Association, we'll spend about $171 billion on electronics this year (from Blu-ray players to "smartphones"), the same as in 2009.And we'll have plenty to choose from -- the CEA's CES trade show this month featured 20,000 new products.(Think you can stump the geeks?
